List of Storage Concepts

I was working as a support engineer in one of the Hardware giant. I was supporting Servers and Operating system. During this time, I got training for legacy storage from StorageTek. It was the first time I got exposed to storage technology. During the breaks, my classmates and I use to discuss the learnings.

Here are a few concepts that we discussed. In this post, we are listing these points. We will deep dive on each of them in separate posts.

Storage:

A Storage is nothing but a big disk connected to the system internally or externally.

The definition of Storage is “The action or method of storing something for future use.” The retention of retrievable data on a computer or other electronic system is Data Storage.

For example, A closet, USB pen drive/ USB HDD, and internal HDD/RAM/CDROM or even FLOPPY are storages.

Types of Storages

When I asked these questions to my classmates, they told me DAS, SAN and NAS are the three types of storages. Much later in my career, I discover that NAS/DAS/SAN are the different types of connectivities.

Then what are the types of Storages???

Types of Storages are Active/Passive, ALUA, and Symmetric.

RAID:

Redundant Array of Independent / Inexpensive Disks. We all know this definition. But to make it simple, RAID is a method of bundling or grouping two or more disks. The purpose of grouping is to draw a better performance and get more space.

Normal RAID levels are 0/1/2/3/4/5/6. Enhanced RAIDs are 1E/5E, and Combination RAIDs are 10/01/50/60.

Storage Protocols:

Protocols are nothing but a language that is used between two devices. Basics of Language is applicable here as well that both the speakers should be talking in the same language or they need an interpreter for the communication.

In this series, we will also talk about the Performance, Array configuration, Host Integration, Switch Configuration and Troubleshooting.

See you in the Next Post !!
